Cupid’s Reminder Will’s phone began buzzing on the dashboard of the sleek interior of his Bavarian automobile as it crept through the city like a cat prowling for a victim. He picked up the phone to see the reminder he had set for himself. It simply read, “Big hug, kiss and compliment.” Will and his wife had many fights about the lack of intimacy in their marriage of over 14 years. There were hurt feelings, threats of divorce and of course, accusations of infidelity. But they both stuck it out and made it work. So Will’s solution to the problem was to keep his marriage on track the same way he did all the demanding tasks at work. He scheduled. It may not have been the best solution but it was his solution; and it worked. Tonight he would walk through the door, give Cass a big hug, a passionate kiss and at some point compliment her on something. He had different messages, “buy flowers,” “take a walk” even “make love” all set at different intervals. Not that he needed prompts to remind him that he loved his bride with every fiber of his being. He did. She was his best friend, lover and so much more. But Will was an occupational perfectionist that engrossed himself so deeply in his work that many times, he forgot and even missed out on the important things. His work as a public relations consultant for a media conglomerate kept him busy and perpetually preoccupied. So a little prompting from his calendar was just what this Cyrano needed. As he thought of getting home to his beautiful Cass his foot put pressure on the gas pedal and his metal cat pounced. The city light bounced from the spotless, dark metal finish like celestial projectiles as he gained speed and switched from lane to lane avoiding the drivers who were obviously not going home to the love of their life. As Will pulled up to their suburban home on a street of pruned bushes and immaculate sidewalks that boast playing children on bikes and rollerblades during the day, he smiled. Not because he was finally home but because not one week before he had gotten the “take walk” and “make love” prompt on his calendar. Although two distinct activities, Will had not become as successful as he was by not knowing how to multitask. After dinner as they strolled down the quiet streets, Will got a devious thought. They loved walking and chatting but as they approached their driveway, Will’s demeanor changed. “Well Cass, I really enjoyed our date. I would ask you to have me in but I don’t imagine you are that type of woman…” Cass played along. “You might be surprised. But my husband is in there so an invitation inside is definitely out of the question.” With that Will grabbed Cass and began kissing her neck. After 14 years of marriage he could still send chills down her spine in a blink of an eye. The same pruned bushes that served as clubhouses for children during the day served as cover for the two lovers this night. Will reached easily under Cass’ short tennis skirt and pulled her underwear down her thighs. They rolled down and came to a rest at her ankles in one motion she slid one delicately pedicured foot from the lacy garment and draped her thigh over Will’s arm. Almost as if choreographed, Will slid inside Cass. They still fit like pieces of a puzzle. She looked into his eyes and he gazed back and their love was evident. But this sordid affair was just the thing that kept their love strong after all these years… Will found himself sitting in the luxurious cockpit of his late model car smiling as he recalled the encounter. He exited the car with grace as his slender six foot plus frame made long strides to the door. He smiled and waved to a nosey neighbor looking from her window knowing the thoughts she had about his smooth chocolate complexion. Will was happy to make her day with a smile and acknowledgement but that had to suffice. Will was always anxious to see Cass when he got a reminder. He knew how much she enjoyed the special attention he was able to give her and that investment into their relationship was fulfilling to him. He entered the foyer and could hear his love in the den. “Hey Baby.” He smugly paced across the room and hugged Cass tightly and followed up with a kiss. Their lips barely connected, then reconnect in a passionate hunger. They stood in the middle of the room, holding one another and swaying to the music that shared their space. “You look so beautiful, Mrs. Johnson.” He complimented. “Thank you. You look dashing yourself, Mr. Johnson.” She replied with a smile. Her slightly crooked teeth took nothing from her beauty. She was the epitome of class and stunning with the posture of a runway model. Her vanilla jasmine body spray teased Will as they continued their mutual embrace. “You smell good.” He complimented once more. She only nodded in response as her head was in his chest lost in the scent from his cologne. Will basked in the knowledge of a job well done. He had completed the task and all was well. He was proud of his system. But knowing Cass, she could never know. She just wouldn’t understand. At that moment, his phone began buzzing between the two. Cass smiled to herself. A reminder at this hour can only mean one thing. It’s going to be a wonderful night after bedtime in the Johnson house. |
